Albino Baby Elephant Rescued from Snare Now Thriving

In 2020, a baby albino elephant named Khanyisa was rescued after being trapped in a snare for four agonizing days.

The young calf sustained severe injuries, including deep cuts on her face, ears, and neck, leaving her with lasting scars.

Khanyisa, born with a rare pinkish skin tone, was found tangled in a snare at a private reserve near the border of Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The snare had cut deeply into her flesh, leaving her with serious wounds that became infested with maggots, causing significant damage to her cheeks and mouth.

Fortunately, the Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) orphanage came to Khanyisa’s aid, providing her with the care she needed to begin her recovery.

Sue Howells from HERD described Khanyisa as a “unique beauty” who appeared fragile and pure yet displayed remarkable bravery despite the trauma she endured.

“She is extraordinarily strong and courageous,” Howells said, emphasizing Khanyisa’s resilience and gentle personality that shines through even after her ordeal.

Khanyisa is now under the care of a specialized orphanage designed to rehabilitate displaced or orphaned elephant calves.

Since her rescue, she has gradually integrated into the Jabulani Herd, a group of 15 elephants living in the Kapama Reserve near Kruger National Park. Her rescuers confirmed that the herd had warmly embraced her.

Khanyisa, whose name means “light” or “sunshine,” is now thriving, thanks to the dedicated efforts of those who rescued and supported her.

We wish Khanyisa continued health and happiness as she grows and thrives in her new home.
