Elephant’s Awkward Stumble After Displaying Dominance in South African Safari

During a safari at South Africa’s Nambiti Game Reserve, photographer Joseph Anthony witnessed a remarkable scene involving two young male elephants in a face-off.

The two bulls flared their ears and raised their trunks, each trying to appear larger and assert their dominance within the herd.

As the tense display came to an end, one of the elephants began heading back to the herd – only to lose its footing and take a dramatic fall.

The young elephant stumbled to its knees in what Anthony described as a “momentary fall from grace” before quickly recovering and continuing.

Reflecting on the encounter, Mr. Anthony noted the rarity of such a sight. “My guide and other guides at the Reserve agreed it was an all-time top five wildlife moment to witness and capture,” he said.

He explained that the elephant’s running likely contributed to its fall, adding, “I was surprised to see him stumble while looking through my viewfinder.”

The unexpected tumble was amusing and endearing, adding a touch of vulnerability to the otherwise powerful and majestic animal.

Anthony added that, while he had seen animals like cheetahs and antelope misstep, this was his first time seeing an elephant stumble in such a way.
