James Weis, a guide from Chicago leading the tour, shared his account of the dramatic encounter. “We heard the cries of an elephant and rushed over to see what was happening,” he explained.

“We found two large female elephants and their calves surrounded by about 18 hyenas. The mother charged at the hyenas repeatedly, determined to protect her calf.”

The calf stayed close to its mother throughout the ordeal, relying on her strength as she bravely fought off the relentless attackers.
