Guests at the Etali Safari Lodge in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve enjoy the rare privilege of witnessing wildlife up close, but one regular visitor takes the experience to a whole new level.
A cheeky African elephant, affectionately nicknamed Troublesome by the staff, has made the lodge’s splash pools his oasis for the past four years, much to the amusement of tourists.
Video footage captures Troublesome confidently wandering the resort, expertly navigating pathways as if he owns the place.
With a splash of humor and a hefty dose of charm, he dips his trunk into the pools for a refreshing drink and occasionally sprays nearby onlookers, perhaps as a playful reminder of his presence.
While Etali guests often enjoy sundowners overlooking herds of elephants in their natural habitat, having one stroll into the deck area to share the moment is an entirely different experience.
However, Troublesome’s antics, including repeatedly emptying the pools, have prompted the lodge to take measures to deter him.
According to Etali Safari Lodge manager Kristoff Potgieter, these efforts have proven largely ineffective.
“Troublesome isn’t your average elephant,” he explained. “He has learned to navigate the lodge pathways, searching for opportunities to reach the pools. Most recently, he figured out how to access the main pool on the deck.”
Despite the staff’s attempts to discourage his visits, Troublesome remains undeterred. His antics have added an unexpected yet delightful twist to the lodge’s promise of a unique and personal African bush experience.
Combining wildlife encounters, luxury, and a bit of mischief, Etali Safari Lodge offers memories that are as unforgettable as its resident troublemaker.
